Otti Berger Challenge Shawl

Project type

Weaving and Information

Date

March 2026

Location

Albuquerque, New Mexico

I belong to Las Aranas Spinning and Weaving Guild in New Mexico. The Las Aranas Guild has an annual sale called Spiders' Market. The Challenge for Spiders Market was to Take Something Old and Make it New. We were to find an older pattern, structure or palette and change something to make it new. I chose the cotton fabric that Otti Berger had woven and changed it to “new” by using Icelandic Wool, which Otti would not have had available to her. I changed the inlay a little bit using Plotulopi an unspun wool.

Otti Berger (Otilija Ester Berger) (4 October 1898, in present-day Zmajevac, Croatia - 3 May 1944) was a Croatian student and later teacher at the Bauhaus, where she was a textile artist and weaver. She was murdered in 1944 at Auschwitz during the Holocaust. Wikipedia
